Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has condemned the Chief Minister’s statement recommending to supply liquor on doctor’s prescription. The organization observed that the government's decision is unscientific and unethical and demanded to review it.
Addressing a press meet, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the government will consider allowing fixed quota of liquor to those who could not do without liquor daily, after receiving a prescription from a qualified doctor. Now, KGMOA has come against this statement and criticized the move.
“Modern medicine does not prescribe liquor to treat alcoholism. Alternative treatments are used to cure the condition. We must use such treatments to cure alcohol addiction. Prescribing liquor for alcoholism is unscientific and unethical,” KGMOA stated.
The Chief Minister made the controversial statement after some people committed suicide after being unable to consume alcohol following the closure of liquor shops amid lockdown.
KGMOA also pointed out that there are chances for community transmission of COVID-19 in the state.
The number of patients suffering from fever and cold is increasing in hospitals including primary health centres. In view of this, the association demanded a detailed scientific examination of the patients.
KGMOA also demanded the government to supply more equipment for their safety amid the pandemic outbreak.
