Thiruvananthapuram: The State Election Commission aims to cut costs incurred during every election by linking the voter list to Aadhaar. The state body is hopeful that this could also reduce incidents like electoral fraud and ballot rigging.

Further, the electoral officials at polling booths can be reduced to a minimum. However, this requires changes in laws related to local body elections.

Adopting a single voter list for local, Assembly and Lok Sabha elections will also be beneficial.

While the State election body prepares voter lists based on ward level, the Election Commission of India prepares the list based on polling booths in the area. As a result, the voter list for the state assembly and Lok Sabha elections are not applicable in local body polls.

To avoid this, the state requested the ECI in 2017 to adopt a single voter list based on the ward level. ECI also promised they would consider this demand. Former State Election Commissioner (SEC) V Bhaskaran said this could reduce the expenses on elections.

Around six officials are appointed in each polling station during elections. By linking voter ID with Aadhaar, this number can be reduced, and more transparency can be ensured during elections.
