Kozhikode: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will rule the Mukkam municipality after the Muslim League rebel candidate, who won the Local Self Government polls decided to support the front.
Muhammad Abdul Majeed, the IUML rebel candidate said that the LDF agreed to the demands put forward by his voters. “My decision is taken by my voters,” he added.
Mukkam municipality grabbed attention during the LSG polls due to the presence of the Welfare Party of India. When the results were announced, the LDF and the UDF-Welfare Party alliance secured 15 seats each. The NDA won 2 seats while Muhammad Abdul Majeed, the IUML rebel candidate, won the one remaining seat.
As NDA decided not to support any front in the state, Majeed’s decision decided the fate of the municipality. Muhammad Abdul Majeed had won from Irattakulangara ward.
Even though Muhammad Abdul Majeed said that he held discussions with both the LDF and UDF, it is learned that the United Democratic Front did not make much effort to secure Majeed’s support.
UDF’s alliance with the Welfare party was cited as a major reason for the front’s debacle in the LSG polls. The LDF turned this into a major weapon and it even resulted in criticism from within the UDF.
If the UDF rules Mukkam municipality, the opponents will raise further criticism against UDF’s alliance with the Welfare Party. The UDF is trying to avoid such a situation in view of the Assembly election.
Muhammad Abdul Majeed said that development of Mukkam was his priority. “I am still a Muslim League activist. My support for LDF is limited to the municipality. Outside its jurisdiction, I will actively participate in Muslim League’s activities. I will withdraw my support if the LDF goes back on its agreements,” he added.
