LDF’s no confidence motion fails, Soumini Jain to continue as Kochi mayor
Kochi: The no confidence motion by LDF against Kochi corporation mayor Soumini Jain failed. The LDF could only gain 33 votes in support of the motion in the 74-member council here on Thursday.
Only 35 out of the 74 councillors took part in the proceedings. The LDF has 34 members in the Kochi corporation council. An NCP member did not take part in the proceedings citing ill health. Two BJP councillors who were present in the council refrained from taking part in the motion discussion.
Ruling UDF and its 38 councillors did not take part in the proceedings. The UDF had earlier decided to give the no confidence motion discussion a miss. UDF councillors gathered at the DCC office and held a meeting there.
Following this election officer district Collector S. Suhas announced that the no confidence motion has failed. Earlier, there were reports of opposition against mayor Soumini Jain from within UDF itself.
The LDF, which moved the motion citing corruption allegations against the mayor argued that the UDF members themselves were not found of the mayor and it was the reason why UDF did not want its councillors to take part in the proceedings.
However, mayor Soumini Jain dismissed the allegations as baseless. She said that the opposition LDF had filed the notice and moved the no confidence motion without studying the situation.
Reiterating that she had the support of all 38 UDF members, Soumini Jain said she was ready to step down from the post of mayor if the party demanded.
Soumini Jain will continue as mayor of Kochi. Earlier in the day, Ernakulam DCC president T.J. Vinod had told Mathrubhumi News that changing the mayor was not in the agenda of the Congress at present.
