Kozhikode: Wishing a long-life to former chief minister of Kerala VS Achuthanandan on his 98th birthday, veteran communist leader and writer Berlin Kunjananthan Nair has told Mathrubhumi.com that the decision not to make VS the chief minister in 2016 has turned fruitful for the party.
“There were some internal issues about which I don’t have to talk now. I can say one thing now, the decision taken was not bad. If Pinarayi had not become the chief minister, he wouldn’t have ever got the post. After all, VS was too old to become a chief minister. It was by considering his physical ailments the decision was taken. No doubt it upset many. However, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government has made an exemplary performance and won hearts through the welfare measures implemented,” said Berlin Kunjananthan Nair.
He also said that the LDF retained power for the second consecutive term was the result of good governance by the government. “Pinarayi Vijayan soon proved to be an efficient chief minister and became popular. When you look back, the decision to choose Pinarayi over VS was in fact good for the party and front” added Berlin.
Berlin Kunjananthan Nair, said, “ I wish a long life for comrade VS Achuthanandan.”
In 2016, LDF secured a huge win with 91 seats. VS was 92 at that time and he actively campaigned for the party with much enthusiasm. Being the most recognisable leader in the front, VS was considered for the chief minister’s post. He won from Malampuzha against C Krishnakumar at a margin of 27,142 votes. However, the scenes following it were not pleasing for him as unexpectedly Pinarayi Vijayan took the helm of the state ruling.
