Kalpetta: LDF will observe a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the Wayanad district on Sunday against the Supreme Court order declaring a 1 kilometre area around protected forest region. Meanwhile, UDF has announced a hartal in the district on June 15.
In its order, SC directed that each protected forest, including national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, must have an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of one kilometre and ban mining activities within such parks across the nation. With this, no construction and mining activities will be allowed in the eco-sensitive zones.
Protesting over the SC order, LDF demanded the central government to legislate rule against the SC order or move a modification petition against the SC directive.
LDF also demanded to exclude human settlement areas from the Eco-Sensitive Zones and consider forest boundaries in human settlement areas as buffer zones.
At the same time, UDF demanded the state and central governments view the concern of farmers in the state. Essential services are excluded from the hartal.
