Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF has decided not to increase the water tariff in Kerala.
Earlier, the Kerala Water Department had sought to increase the tariff citing financial crisis. However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan clarified that the situation was not appropriate for increasing the water tariff.
During the meeting of officials, the CM also said that increasing the water tariff would turn public sentiment against the government.
Minister for Water Resources K. Krishnankutty had presented the matter during the LDF meeting on Friday. Leaders including CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran and NCP leader T.P. Peethambaran Master opposed the move.
Kanam Rajendran questioned whether it was right to increase the water tariff at a time when Delhi is providing water free of cost.
Meanwhile, the meeting did not discuss the CAG report.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, LDF convener A. Vijayaraghavan said that there was conspiracy in the CAG report leaking before being tabled in the Assembly and that the matter must be probed.
He alleged that the media and the Opposition were creating controversies over the CAG report.
