LDF conquers 2 sitting seat of UDF; Aroor moves to photo finish
Thiruvananthapuram: The counting of votes in the by-election to five assembly constituencies is entering the final phase. According to the latest reports, LDF conquered the sitting seats of UDF in Vattiyoorkavu and Konni whereas UDF retained its seats in Ernakulam and Manjeshwaram.
The counting in Aroor constituency, the sitting seat of LDF, is likely to end in a photo finish as UDF candidate Shanimol Usman is leading by a slight margin. At present, Shanimol is leading by 2029 votes when the last round of counting process in underway.
UDF candidate T. J. Vinod managed to retain the seat in Ernakulam despite unfavourable political atmosphere. His victory has been declared with a margin of 3673 votes. Hibi Eden of UDF had won the seat for a margin of 21,949 votes in the previous election. Compared to the two previous elections, there is a considerable decline in the votes earned by the UDF.
LDF candidate in Vattiyoorkavu V K Prasanth has won by more than 14251 votes. Prasanth was leading right from the initial stage itself over UDF candidate K Mohan Kumar and NDA candidate S Suresh. An LDF victory in Vattiyoorkavu could turn to be a major boost for Left cadres in the constituency and a heavy blow to the UDF faction as it was UDF's sitting seat.
K. U. Janeesh Kumar of the LDF has secured victory in the Konni bypolls by a margin of 9953 votes. Janeesh Kumar’s victory marks the grand comeback of LDF to the constituency after a gap of 23 years. He emerged victorious after securing a comfortable lead over UDF’s P Mohan Raj and NDA’s K Surendran.
In Manjeshwaram, UDF candidate M. C. Kamarudeen won by 7923 votes. BJP candidate Raveesha Tantri Kundar is in the second place and LDF candidate Sankar Rai is trailing behind in the third spot.
