Lathi charge style of British era to be discarded; Hitting on head not allowed
Palakkad: The method of police lathi charge is going to be modified. A new lathi drill will take place at Kallekkad AR camp here on Tuesday reminding the fact that lathi charge is only intended to scare people away.
The lathi charge style in the British era is still followed by the police. As per the new style, lathi charge should not cause any serious injuries. The muscle below the knees, shoulder, sides of body are allowed to be beaten with lathi during lathi charge. Hitting on head is not allowed. Also, it is directed that the protestors should not be treated as enemies. They have the right to protest.
The lathi drill intends to show how to control a crowd without injuring the people and the police officers. The lathi drill is implemented as directed by DIG (Administration) Sethuraman. He said that in most cases only a few among the protestors cause troubles. But the lathi charge injuries many innocent people.
"The new style of drill was designed in 2009 when I was KAP-4 command in order to avoid injuring many people during the lathi charge. However, the new form of drill was officially approved only now," DIG Sethuraman said. The drill practice was supervised by police officers Ganesh Kumar, Shahir Shah, Sanjushan and Rakesh all over the state.
