Thiruvananthapuram: Repeated incidents of Maoists being killed show the incompetence of the government, said leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala.
“I am not saying what happed in Lakkidi in Wayanad was a fake encounter. However, the relatives of C P Jaleel, who was killed in the encounter has alleged so. So the government must provide clarification,” he said.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan must explain what happened. I was surprised when CPM state secretary Kanam Rajendran said he was unaware of what had happened. Doesn’t he read newspapers or watch TV? Following the Nilambur encounter, Kanam had criticized the government for its immaturity, why is he not speaking now? Chennithala asked.
Jaleel’s family has connections with Maoist ideologies, he said. “More suspicions regarding the incident are coming out. Jaleel’s family is alleging it was a fake encounter. This is the third Maoist killed in an encounter since this government came to power. I had supported the government in the Nilambur encounter. But if people are being killed in encounters, the public have the right to know what happened,” Chennithala said.
Stating that the government failed to implement a strategy to capture the Maoists, Chennithala said it showed the government’s failure to ensure security for its people. “If Roopesh and Shaina were easily arrested, the government must rethink using such tactics. Such incidents call of investigation as directed by the Supreme Court,” he said
