Kuttanad MLA Thomas Chandy Passes away
Kochi: Kuttanad MLA and former minister Thomas Chandy passed away at a private hospital here on Friday.
The former transport minister is also state president of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Kerala. The 72-year-old had been undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital here.
Thomas Chandy has represented Kuttanadu thrice. He was a transport minister in the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry.
Thomas Chandy started his political career with Kerala Students Union (KSU). He was selected as the KSU president in Kuttanad and later the president of Youth Congress.
After entering active politics with Congress, Thomas Chandy aligned himself with the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) (DIC (K). He then moved to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
He was the lone DIC (K) MLA from UDF in the 2006 elections. In 2011, he aligned with LDF as an NCP member.
Thomas Chandy is is survived by wife Mercy and their son and two daughters.
