Alappuzha: Flood-deluged regions Kuttanad and Chengannur have been warned of an epidemic like rat fever, cholera, jaundice and viral fever. The main reasons said is the contaminated water sources and the unburied rotted animal corpses. Such condition increase the chance of widespread outbreaks.
Another problem faced here is lack of drinking water. Wells are like storage houses for waste. Cleaning works have just begun in the areas. Water here has to be drained first and ensure disinfection by super chlorination. Currently, due to unavailability of drinking water, the contaminated water is being used.
According to Health Ministry, the water used for washing plates must be chlorinated water. Yet, these instructions are unable to be followed here.
Septic tanks and drinking water sources have become one in the floods. The process of burying animal corpses is underway.
