Kuttanad agri-loan scam: Fr.Thomas Peeliyanikkal remanded till July 4
Alappuzha: The Ramankari judicial first class magistrate court has remanded Kuttanad Development Committee Executive Director Fr. Thomas Peeliyanikkal for 14 days for forging documents to take agricultural loans from different banks in Alappuzha.
Fr.Thomas Peeliyanikkal has been remanded till July 4.
Fr. Thomas Peeliyanikkal allegedly drafted fake documents and received crores of rupees illegally as agricultural loan.
One of the main accused in the case Adv. Rojo Joseph, who is a member of Veliyanad block panchayat and is also a NCP leader, is absconding. Advocate Rojo Joseph is practicsing in Ramankari court.
Thresyamma and Joseph, office staff of the Kuttanad Development Committee, are also accused in the scam along with Rojo and his wife.
The crime branch investigation team had arrested Fr. Thomas Peeliyanikkal from Ramankari Kuttanad Development Committee office on Tuesday evening.
Police have registered 12 cases in relation with the scam and Fr, Thomas has obtained anticipatory bail on many of them. When the case was considered today, his advocate argued that he has obtained bail from the high court. However, the prosecution observed the accused did not get bail for certain cases.
Fr. Thomas Peeliyanikkal's advocate insisted that his client does not have direct involvement in the scam and as director of Kuttanad Development Committee he had only recommended banks to provide loan. However, the court did not accept the arguments.
Fr. Thomas has formed approximately 1500 self-help groups (SHGs) in Kuttanad and received agricultural loans from different banks in Alappuzha with the support of fake documents. The accused did the forgery and took loans from the banks in the names of the members of the SHGs without their consent. Many of them got to know that loans were taken in their names when they received the attachment notice.
