Kuthiran twin tunnel will not be opened this rainy season
Kuthiran: The promise made by a team of public representatives will not be fulfilled as neither of the twin tunnels here will be opened for traffic on July 15.
It will take at least three more months to finish the works on tunnel-1, which is nearing completion. The tunnel is unlikely to be opened for traffic this rainy season.
Meanwhile, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials said that none of the public representatives have requested to open the tunnel for traffic. The reply from the NHAI project director’s office came in response to an RTI inquiry filed by DCC general secretary Shaji Kodangandath.
According to rules, the inside of the semi-circle shaped tunnel should be completely covered with iron sheets and concrete. But, only the entrances on either side have been completed in this manner.
The construction company argued that the iron sheeting and concreting procedure need not be done in the centre as the rocks were strong enough. However, it was later found that not completing the procedure in the centre will pose a safety risk. Completing the procedure is the most challenging part of the construction now.
