Kunjikkavu Amma receiving the pension from bank employee in presence of Thomas Thokalath

Muriyad (Thrissur): 104-year-old Kunjikkavu Amma was extremely happy to receive pension for the first time. It was during the local body election campaign, Thomas Thokalathu, a public representative and now a ward member, came to know that Pulloor Mullakkad native Kunjikkavu Amma was not receiving senior citizen’s pension.

Soon, Thomas collected the necessary papers and filed an application through Akshaya centre.

Kunjikkavu Amma has been living with her daughter-in-law Sarojam and grandchildren after the death of her husband and son.

Lack of documents to prove age was the hurdle in obtaining pension. But now, the Aadhaar card and ration card are the only documents required, says Thomas.

On Tuesday afternoon, a representative of the cooperative bank handed over the pension of Rs 1500 to Kunjikkavu Amma in the presence of Thomas at home.
