Malappuram: Indian Union Muslim League leader PK Kunhalikutty alleged that the arrest of former minister VK Ebrahim Kunju by Vigilance in connection with the Palarivattom flyover scam was politically motivated.

“This is exactly what LDF Convenor had earlier said – preparing a list of persons to be arrested for political gains. They are announcing it and numbering the persons,” he accused.

Kunhalikutty also said that the arrest was untimely because it has been months since the probe into the case was closed.

“Ebrahim Kunju was earlier summoned serving notice under CrPC Sections and interrogated. They then found that there was no need for arrest in the case pertaining to the Palarivattom flyover. But now, they have found the need for arrest. Mainly to balance the allegations levelled against the government regarding the gold smuggling and other cases and also because the local body elections are around the corner,” he further stated.

“In every case, there is a phase where arrests are made. In case of Palarivattom flyover scam, they had omitted the arrest in that phase. And so, the arrest today is politically motivated. We have obtained information that a conspiracy, on how to make the arrest, was hatched in Thiruvananthapuram for the past two or three days,” he added.
