Kozhikode: District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao declared Kundayithode, ward 44 in the corporation here, as a containment zone. The move comes a day after a trader working at Valiyangadi in the city, who is a resident of Kundayithode, tested positive for coronavirus.

Road traffic has been banned in the area. Vehicles plying for emergency medical assistance and those transporting essential items have been exempted.

People in the containment zone have been refrained from stepping out of their houses for reasons other than seeking medical assistance or to buy essential items. People from other areas are now allowed to enter the zone.

Shops selling food and other essential items will be open from 8 am to 5 pm. If there is a need for essential items to be brought in from outside, people can contact the ward level emergency response team.

The Collector has directed the health department to observe the people residing in the ward. Gathering of five people or more at trade-business entities at a time has been banned. The district police chief has been directed to take steps to ensure tight vigil in the area.

Road transport has been banned in the ward from 7 pm to 7 am, except for emergency medical assistance. People violating the restrictions will face charges according to sections 188 and 269 of IPC, the district Collector said in an order.
