Kudumbasree to catch stray dogs, provide care
Kochi: Block Management Groups functioning under the aegis of Kudumbasree at the district level under the Stray Dog Control Program has started functioning in the city. The units have been assigned the work of catching stray dogs and giving them the required care before and after sterilizing them at the veterinary hospital.
Parakkadavu, Angamali, Pambakkuda and Kothamangalam regions have been included in the project. Twenty trained women have been divided into four teams for the program. Fifteen dogs have been captured and sterilized and are being cared for by the women till date.
The Ernakulam District Panchayat authorities have made known that Rs 750 will be given for each captured dog. Local administration and Animal Welfare board has also been roped in for support in the program. Certificates, uniforms and other amenities have been given to the personnel on the ground.
The target is to train 2000 women in this regard. Formalization of the mission and a raise in the remuneration is also under consideration. The project is also open to men who are members of the families where women are Kudumbasree members. The project has been launched in the context of extremely serious ramifications in the social scene of Kerala following the stray dog menace.
