Kozhikode: The State leadership of Kerala Students Union has come forward against its Ernakulam district committee which passed a motion against the appointment of Anil Antony, son of senior Congress leader A K Antony, as the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) digital media cell convener.
KSU state president K M Abhijith organized a press conference to criticize the move. “Anil Antony is well qualified for the role. He held a similar post in Gujarat and was successful. He was brought to Kerala because of this,” said Abhijith. Stating that he had sought an explanation from the Ernakulam district leadership, Abhijith hinted that unsatisfactory explanation would attract action.
“The All India Congress Committee (AICC) appointed Anil Antony. It has nothing to do with family politics. KSU will not accept if children of leaders are brought into electoral politics even if they are ineligible,” he said.
Anil Antony’s appointment is as a digital media convener and it is directly from the AICC considering his experience. It is not right to discuss an unnecessary motion and create inconvenience for the leaders. The appointment is not because Anil is the son of Antony. Such discussions are pointless, Abhijith added.
The motion passed by the Ernakulam district committee yesterday had cited raising concerns among KSU supporters over the initiation of sons and daughters of senior leaders. The motion had also demanded to question digital media activists who received more importance than those who did the ground work. Abhijith has come out against this.
Answering to questions regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Abhijith said that the KSU would not enter the foray this time around. The party leadership is gearing up to field candidates with the best chance of victory from their respective constituencies, he said.
“There are discussions in constituencies and social media regarding my candidacy. But no such discussions have taken place in person or with KSU. It is the demand of the people from Malabar that their candidate is also from the Malabar,” he said. Congress victory is inevitable to defeat Narendra Modi who destroyed all sectors, he added.
