Kozhikode: It is learnt that inexperienced drivers are the reason behind recurrent accidents of KSRTC Swift buses. The drivers for KSRTC Swift buses are appointed on contract basis without considering empanelled drivers with even 15 years of expertise in driving KSRTC buses. Two drivers of KSRTC Swift were already suspended from service in connection with the accidents.
319 persons were appointed as driver-cum-conductor for KSRTC Swift services. Only three years of experience is the prescribed eligibility for the post. The appointments were carried out disregarding the empanelled drivers with years of experience even in inter-state services.
KSRTC has ensured the unions to appoint the dismissed empanelled drivers while planning to launch the KSRTC Swift services. However, the new drivers were recruited for KSRTC Swift without convening any talks with the workers’ unions, KSRTEA (CITU) state general secretary Vinod said.
Over 1000 among the 6000 empanelled employees were drivers. KSRTEA general secretary asserted that a protest will be launched demanding to appoint the empanelled drivers. But KSRTC Swift officials claimed that the interviews for new drivers were conducted by the Motor Vehicle Department.
