Thiruvananthapuram: A KSRTC bus will turn into a classroom for students at the Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in Kerala University's Karyavattom campus. An old bus from Neyattinkara depot was taken to the campus for arranging the unique classroom. The bus was taken from Pappanamcode to the campus using a crane.
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics department head Dr Achuth Sankar introduced the idea of 'classroom inside bus' intending to bring changes in the learning experience.
Earlier, the department head planned to take a train bogie to the campus. As the central government's permission is mandatory, the department switched to the idea of a classroom inside the bus. Four years back, the university submitted a request to KSRTC seeking a bus for this purpose. But KSRTC didn't respond. A month ago, a fresh request was submitted to KSRTC MD Biju Prabhakar. Approving the request, KSRTC MD ordered to give a bus to the department.
It is learnt that KSRTC can earn Rs 1-2 lakh by selling the bus as scrap. But the bus was given to the university free. The department only met the expenditure on taking the bus to the campus by using a crane.
The Interior of the bus will be renovated and fans and lights will be installed. A classroom inside the bus will start within a month.
The bus is parked in front of the department office.
