Kochi: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has decided to install prepaid smart meters for all consumers across the state. The estimated cost for installing smart meters at the households of 1.3 crore consumers will be around Rs 9,216 crore. Rs 1,170 crore will be provided as Central Grant.
Earlier, the central government had announced that it would install prepaid smart meters for all consumers in the country except for the agricultural sector. In response to this, the state has decided to install 16 lakh smart meters in the first phase for high tension and extra-high tension consumers, and those who consume more than 200 units of electricity. It is estimated that this phase will cost Rs 1,123 crore.
In August, the central government has announced that the country will switch to the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) by March 2025. While announcing the project, the centre also stated that 15 percent cost will be provided as Central Grant to the states. According to KSEB, the estimated cost of the project will be Rs 900 per meter. Further, there will also be a need for transformers and feeders to be adapted to facilitate the smart meters.
In the second phase, smart meters will be installed for 18 lakh low tension consumers for a cost of Rs 1,264 crore in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. In the third phase, 32 lakh low tension consumers in small towns will be switched to smart meters for Rs 1,264 crore and the remaining 64 lakh customers for a cost of Rs 4,493 crore.
