Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will purchase 6 lakh units of electricity per day as daily consumption remains high in the state. KSEB is purchasing power for Rs 9.26 a unit till May 31.

The State Electricity Regulatory Commission had granted KSEB permission to purchase electricity. The move comes following Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) decision to annul a 25-year contract signed in 2014 to purchase electricity from three private companies, citing violation of contract norms.

Meanwhile, KSEB has called a tender to purchase 150 MW of electricity. However, only two companies, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd and Manikaran Power Limited, showed interest in supplying the electricity. Eventually, KSERC approved NTPC's offer to sell 50 MW of electricity for Rs 9.26 per unit.
