Thiruvananthapuram: The State Electricity Board is mulling a new powerhouse project for Idukki. The final decision will be announced at the full body meeting of KSEB on September 26. The project estimate would be more than Rs 20,000 cr.
If the decision at the full body meeting becomes favourable to the project, then it will be presented before the government. After getting approval from the government, a global tender will be called for a feasibility study.
The new powerhouse with a capacity of 700 MW will be installed opposite to the present powerhouse.
Though there is enough water in most of the reservoirs in the state, a proper channel to produce electricity is still not developed. This would be a major problem faced by KSEB.
The current production capacity is only 30 per cent of the required production. If the new project is implemented, then the state would attain self-sufficiency in this matter.
