Kochi: When the bulb was turned on at their single-room house, Akhilesh and his mother Anitha were in tears of joy. They are residing in a small shed near the canal at Kangarappadi in Ernakulam. When the house was electrified, both were relieved that now he does not need to go out to study.

Akhilesh, an engineering student, had to go out in search of light to study every night. When he comes back late at night, he depends on candles and kerosene light. Anitha's husband died seven years ago and she has been working as a housemaid and sweeper since then to raise her son.

Their house was electrified within four hours of applying. Everything started when Anitha went to KSEB Thevakkal section office on Thursday morning inquiring about power connection.

On seeing her application, Assistant Engineer P Pushpalatha asked Overseer K K Nizar to inquire about the application. Overseer visited Anitha's single-room house and informed the matter to Pushpalatha. Then they quickly completed the rest of procedures.

Field workers Subhash, Prajeesh, Sasi, Ullas, Jaleel, Libin, George and Kunjumon finished the works to give them power connection. They also completed wiring in the house within a few hours.

When the KSEB staff arrived at their house to give power connection, there was one guest waiting them there - a snake. Anitha is still afraid of reptiles entering the house.

"Snakes come to our house frequently. We lived in this house made of sheets without lights. My only wish is to educate my son. He works hard though we have no facilities," Anitha said. The power connection has lightened the life of the mother and son.
