Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leaders Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala played a significant role in suggesting the names of the leaders who should be shortlisted as office-bearers for the major reshuffle in KPCC. Congress 'A' group demanded that K Sivadasan Nair should be named in the shortlist of the committee office-bearers. The party is also looking forward to selecting AV Gopinath as the new vice president.
The state leadership is moving ahead after two rounds of discussions with group leaders on the matter to avoid any rift in the party. After discussions with Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala, the state leadership had asked for their opinion on the KPCC revamp. As part of this, the A and I groups put forward their suggestions on the list of 51-member KPCC committee.
It was decided to exclude those who hold MLA and MP posts and those who completed five years in office from the KPCC committee. Therefore, the move by the groups is to include as many group leaders as possible in the 16-member body of general secretaries. While I group nominated AA Shukur, VS Sivakumar and Jyothikumar Chamakala, the A group prefered Aryadan Shaukat, Soni Sebastian, K Sivadasan Nair, Abdul Muttalib and Varkala Kahar to represent their group in the body of general secretaries.
P.M. Niyas, V.T. Balram and Pazhakulam Madhu were backed by the leadership without considering which group they falls to.KPCC president Sudhakaran himself has come forwarded to support Ayaz Tharayil, B. Sugathan and A.V. Gopinath.
The leaders who were criticised by the five regional committees of the KPCC which were appointed to study the defeat in the assembly elections will not be considered for the KPCC reorganisation. At the same time, the former district presidents will be included in the political affairs committee. The state leadership has said that a final decision on the selected members will be taken by the end of this week.
