KPCC chief: K Sudhakaran, Roji K John figure in list
New Delhi: The High Command is likely to announce the new KPCC chief soon as part of change at the helm. Besides the name of K Sudhakaran which was doing the rounds, the name of Roji K John too is now actively being considered and a final decision by the High Command will emerge soon.
The High Command was eager to go for restructuring at the top level when the senior leaders of Kerala were stepping aside without giving any opinion on making Sudhakaran as KPCC chief. AICC general secretary Tariq Anwar, who was in charge of Kerala affairs, had handed over the report to Sonia Gandhi on the changes needed at the top level. It is learnt that the announcement of the new KPCC chief would be made soon.
Angamaly MLA Roji M John was also shortlisted as the clamour for change intensified within the party. Roji was elected to head the NSUI, which is the students wing of the Congress after Rahul Gandhi brought in elections to the students wing. Roji is also close to Rahul. The party also want to bring the Christian community closer with this.
The AICC had already taken a decision to appoint K Sudhakaran to the KPCC chief post. Kerala leaders, who were close to the High Command, also endorsed this. But looking at the way the opposition leader was selected, senior leaders like Oommen Chandy, Ramesh Chennithala and Mullappally Ramachandran were unhappy and they remained silent on this. Hence the decision on announcement was kept pending.
The Ashok Chavan committee which evaluated the party’s defeat in the polls had the names of K Sudhakaran, Kodikunnil Suresh, K Muraleedharan and P T Thomas for KPCC chief’s post. The A and the I group did not show interest in the names of K Sudhakaran or Kodikunnil Suresh. The A group was also not ready to consider P C Vishnunath as part of top-level change. Hence, the name of Roji was put forward, as he is the favourite of Rahul Gandhi. Roji was one of the four leaders who clamoured for V D Satheesan to become the opposition leader.
