Kozhikode woman sets herself ablaze, succumbs to injuries alleging spousal abuse

Chaliyam: A woman who tried committing suicide by setting herself ablaze, allegedly due to spousal abuse, succumbed to burn injuries on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Shafeeda, a native of Chaliyam, Kozhikode. She had been undergoing treatment at a hospital for burn injuries.

In her dying declaration, she revealed that she decided to commit suicide due to spousal abuse. Following this, the police arrested Jaffar, Shafeeda’s husband, for abetment to suicide. He is currently remanded.

Meanwhile, Shafeeda’s family alleged mystery over her death and demanded a detailed probe into the incident. They alleged that Jaffar stood watching while the incident occurred.

Shafeeda, who sustained severe burn injuries, was admitted to Kozhikode medical college the other day. According to her family, domestic violence by the in-laws led to her death.

They also alleged that Jaffar, who often came home drunk, assaulted his wife several times. The body has been shifted to the mortuary at the medical college.
