Malappuram: A young woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.17 crore at the Karipur airport. The accused has been identified as Shabna, a native of Kunnamangalam, Kozhikode. The woman, who arrived from Jeddah, was nabbed while trying to smuggle the gold by hiding it inside her clothes.
Shabna arrived at Karipur airport on Tuesday evening by a SpiceJet flight. A total of 18884 grams of gold was hidden in a mixture form inside her clothes. Although she had escaped the customs inspection without getting caught, she was nabbed by the police.
Earlier, the police had received information about gold smuggling in the airport. On this basis, Shabna was taken into custody. However, she did not admit to the crime despite being interrogated for hours. When the police searched her vehicle, the gold mixture was spotted inside the door pocket.
Apparently, Shabna, who came out of the airport, shifted the gold from her clothes to a handbag and later hid it in the vehicle. Following this, she cooperated with the police interrogation.
Meanwhile, the police will produce the seized gold before the court. A detailed report will also be submitted to the customs for further investigation. This is the 17th gold smuggling case recorded in Karipur airport this year.
