Kozhikode corporation lifts ban on sale of brined fruits, imposes strict restrictions

Kozhikode: Corporation removed the ban on selling brined fruits and vegetable in Kozhikode city. Mayor Dr M Beena Philip announced the decision to lift the ban after holding talks with the people who are engaged in the sale of brined items. The health department of the corporation said that those who properly follow the instructions will be allowed to continue the sale.

The corporation banned the sale after two children suffered burns after consuming an acid solution used for salting the fruits and vegetables. It was in this context that the mayor called a meeting of the vendors.

Major Instructions to vendors

  • Do not use concentrated acidic liquid. Use quality vinegar as specified by the FSSAI.
  • Only boiled water or water from the Corporation's ‘Theertham’ plant should be used until the arrangements are completed for water purification.
  • Only purchase items like ice or any chemicals from authorised companies.
  • Drinking water should be stored in transparent containers only.
  • Vendors must obtain a health card, identity card, license from the Corporation and the Food Safety Department.
