'Payanthi' fish caught in Koyilandy

Koyilandy: A huge ‘Payanthi’ fish (Ephiepidea family) that was brought to Koyilandy harbour evoked curious onlookers. The rare kind of ‘payanthi’ fish caught by the fishermen here had the images of other fish encrypted on its flat body.

The skin with the images of different fish was found only on one side of the body which was black in colour. Though the ‘payanthi’ fish used to get trapped in the net on rare occasions, it was the first time the fishermen caught a ‘Payanthi’ which has pictures of other fish on its body, said fishermen. Soon after catching the fish, people on-board the boat captured the images and videos and shared on social media.

The fish was caught four nautical miles away from Koyilandy shore on Friday morning. It looked similar to that of Pomfret fish (‘Avoli’).

‘Payanthi’ fish costs up to Rs 500 per kilogram.
