Kottayam indoor stadium in ruins just three years after opening
Kottayam: Just three years after it was opened, the Indoor stadium in Nagampadam which was built using several crores of rupees, is in a dilapidated condition.
The maple-wood flooring inside the stadium, which is under the control of the district sports council, has been damaged on one side. Water flowing out of the toilets has resulted in dirt getting accumulated in the area. A foul smell is emanating from the premises as well.
Athletes also point out that during rains, water leaks from the roof and lands inside the stadium. There are no lights or air conditioning in place.
The absence of a system in place for cleaning and maintenance is causing the problems inside the stadium. It is alleged that despite collecting Rs 700 per month from those coming to practice inside the stadium, even basic facilities are not provided.
The stadium was constructed three years ago, using funds to the tune of Rs 25.28 crore from both the state and central governments. Though the work was initiated in March 4, 1983, the project kept on getting delayed owing to various reasons.
The stadium offers facilities for badminton, volleyball, basketball among others. It is capable of seating 2,000 people and has parking facility for 250 cars and 100 two wheelers. It also has a sports hotel were 50 athletes can stay at a time and a medical examination room.
The district sports council office is also functioning inside the stadium.
Action will be taken
The problems with the indoor stadium has not been brought to our attention. We will examine the matter and take suitable action, said Aymanam Babu, district sports council president.
