Kollam has highest suicide rates in India
New Delhi: As per the data recorded by the National Crime Records Bureau, which is responsible for collecting and analysing crime data as defined by the Indian Penal Code, Kollam district accounted for the highest number of suicides in India. Kollam recorded a suicide rate of 40.3 per cent which is higher than the metro cities.
Last year, 447 people committed suicide in Kollam district which has a population of 11.1 lakh while Srinagar recorded the lowest rate of suicides.
Crime Records Bureau has listed the estimated rate of suicides in 7 districts of Kerala.
Malappuram district recorded 3.3 per cent of suicide rates, which is the lowest in the state, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (19.3) , Thrissur (12.5), Kochi (10.5), Kozhikode (9.9) and Kannur (9.4).
Chennai topped in suicide rates in metro cities.Total population of Chennai is approximately 87 lakhs.
According to the latest statistics, Bangalore reported 22.4 per cent of suicide deaths in India, Mumbai (6.5 per cent) and Delhi (11.3 per cent).
The state is now fifth in the suicide incidence as per the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau.
