Kollam girl's suicide: Kerala bank prez demands probe, justifies attachment of property

Abhirami, Gopi Kottamurikkal

Kollam: President of Kerala Bank, Gopi Kottamurikkal justified the bank's decision to attach the house of Abhirami, the girl who died by suicide after receiving the attachment notice from the bank. He also demanded a probe to ascertain the reason behind the girl's suicide.

He said that the bank took the action as per the protocol. He also added that possible shortcomings on the part of the bank officers will be inspected.

“A board declaring attachment of the property was installed by following the normal procedure. The bank holds no grudge against the family. The reason behind the girl’s suicide must be probed. It would have been saddening for her to see the attachment notice posted on her house. But the bank took this step as a recovery measure in case of arrears,” Gopi Kottamurikkal said.

“When the branch manager and other bank officers arrived at the house last day, only the girl’s grandfather was present. The girl and her parents had gone to visit a deceased person's family. The officers informed the matter to old man and he signed the notice. The officers placed the board in front of the tree near the house and returned. Following this, the girl’s parents arrived at the bank. The bank officials then informed the couple that the arrears have to be paid within the deadline or that the house will be attached. They came to know about the girl’s death when they reached home,” he added.
