Guruvayur: The 10-day annual festival at Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayur commenced with ‘Kodiyettam’ (flag hoisting ceremony) on Friday night.

Chief priest Chennas Dinesan Namboodiripad hoisted the flag in the presence of tantri Hari Namboodiripad, Satheesan Namboodiripad, Sreekanth Namboodiripad and Krishnan Namboodiripad. Ooralan Mallissery Krishnan Namboodiripad supervised the rituals.

Tusker Gokul won the ‘Anayottam’ (elephant race) held as part of the festival on Friday at 3 pm. Elephants Manjulal and Chenthamarakshan came second and third in the race, respectively.

The temple procession of deity, also called ‘Seeveli’, was held without an elephant on Saturday morning. Seeveli, usually conducted by carrying the idol on top of the elephant, will be performed without an elephant only on the initial day of the Guruvayur festival.
