Kodiyeri steps down, M V Govindan appointed CPM state secretary

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan stepped down from his role as the party State Secretary on Sunday due to his ill health. Veteran CPM leader and incumbent Minister for Local Self Government and Excise M V Govindan was appointed as the CPM state secretary in place of Kodiyeri. The decision was taken at the crucial CPM state committee meeting held on Sunday.

Following M V Govindan's appointment as state secretary, the cabinet will be reshuffled and the decision regarding this will be taken during the state secretariat on Monday.

M V Govindan, one of the founding members of DYFI, has served as the secretary of the Kannur and Ernakulam districts. He is the former Chief Editor of the Malayalam daily Deshabhimani.

Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met Kodiyeri at his flat ahead of the party’s crucial meeting on Sunday. He was accompanied by party politburo member MA Baby and general secretary SitaramYechury. M V Govindan also paid a visit to Kodiyeri's flat.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has been keeping unwell for quite some time and after his return from the US a few months back, he had not been actively taking part in meetings.

Kodiyeri became the state secretary in 2015 and was reappointed in 2018. He served as Home minister in V S Achuthanandan-led LDF government from 2006 to 2011.
