Kochi Metro turns 1; KMRL celebrates anniversary
Kochi: It has been one year since Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kochi Metro. KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited) is celebrating its first birthday with grand ceremonies. KMRL has prepared a free ride and lucky draw contests for passengers.
The celebrations started on Sunday at 11 in the morning at Edappally Metro station with cake cutting. K. V. Thomas MP, KMRL MD Muhammed Haneesh IAS, MLAs Hibi Eden, M. Swaraj, Anwar Sadath, Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain and others attended the programmes.
Later, magician Gopinath Muthukad performed a magic show at metro station. A huge crowd was witnessing the show ‘Time Traveler – Magic Metro’ which linked Edappally and Changambuzha park stations.
The celebrations began with the services starting an hour earlier than the usual schedule on the anniversary day. The passengers will have an opportunity to get prizes on coupons received along with the tickets till Monday.
As part of the celebrations, those who take Kochi One Card will be relieved from the issue fee of Rs 237 till June 30. Within one month, daily and monthly passes also will come into effect.
Though the anniversary of Metro inauguration falls on Sunday, its service had started on June 19. KMRL MD Muhammed Haneesh informed that Kochi Metro will offer free service on Tuesday which is the anniversary of Metro service. He also said that they are organizing ‘Free Ride Day’ to present the Metro experience to those who have not travelled by a Metro.
The first phase of the Metro service to Petta will commence within one year. The extension to Kakkanad and Nedumbassery Airport will also be realized soon, said KMRL MD in an exclusive interview to mathrubhumi.com. He added that Metro will be profitable with this.
