Kochi cop demands bribe from soil smugglers, visuals come out

Kochi: The purported visuals of a cop under Ernakulam district surfaced on social media, putting the apparent nexus between the authorities concerned and the soil smuggling mafia in the limelight.The Kerala Police on Monday ordered a preliminary probe into the matter.

The inquiry order has been given by the Superintendent of Police (SP), Ernakulam Rural, Vivek Kumar after the SI of Ayyampuzha police station was seen, in the video, demanding more money from a person for allowing to transport soil.

The person in the visuals has been identified as Grade ASI Bijukuttan, who had been working under Ayyampuzha Station, Ernakulam Rural.

In the visuals, the ASI was heard saying “Rs 500 won’t be enough” to permit a pass for two loads of soil that were transported illegally.

As the visuals triggered a controversy, the cop reportedly has been transferred to AR Camp.

Further actions will be taken against him once the preliminary investigation report is submitted, revealed sources.

The authority asserted that strict action will be taken against the ASI if he is found guilty of supporting the violators by accepting a bribe.

Meanwhile, it is not yet clear when the incident happened.
