KNA Khader is UDF candidate for Vengara bypolls
Malappuram: The UDF will field IUML leader KNA Khader as its candidate for the upcoming Vengara byelections.
His candidature was announced by IUML state President Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal at a press meet today. P K Kunhalikutty MP was also present.
The decision was taken at the League Parliamentary Board meeting convened at Panakkad.
The election campaign will begin today itself, Kunhalikutty said.
The name of U A Latheef was actively considered till the last minute. He will be made party's Malappuram General Secretary replacing Khader.
Muslim League General Secretary KPA Majeed had confirmed yesterday that he will not contest the polls.
Earlier, Khader was elected as MLA from Vallikkunnu and Kondotty constituencies.
There have been reports that Khader had put pressure on League leadership for his candidature. However, the IUML clarified that Khader was selected on hopes that he can surpass the poll victory of Kunhalikutty who won by a margin of 38,000 votes in Vengara in the previous Assembly polls.
E T Muhammed Basheer backed KNA Khader at the League meeting today, it is learned.
The elections will be held on October 11.
