Kottayam: KK Shailaja, former Minister for Health, visited the residence of Dr. Vandana Das, who was killed while on duty at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. Vandana's father, KG Mohandas, expressed his distress to Shailaja, stating that some had made unnecessary remarks about the incident, and the family is not in a position to tolerate it. He also questioned the effectiveness of the police department as they were unable to save his daughter's life.

Mohandas asked, "The police officers were armed with guns. Even if they could not use them, there were plastic chairs in the room. Couldn't they have rescued her by attacking the assailant with the chairs? If not, why were the police officers appointed there?"

He said that Vanadana had initially got admission in Punjab. However, the family decided not to send their only daughter to Punjab and hence took admission at a private medical college here.

“It was her grandmother's dream to make her a doctor. She would have come back to me after three or four months,” said Mohandas.

He also pointed out that the youth in Kerala are moving to foreign countries as the state is now devoid of better living conditions. Probably after 10 years, Kerala would become a state only occupying elderly people as the youth who migrate abroad refuse to return, he said.
