Domestic electricity generation declines despite rising consumption in state

Seethathodu (Pathanamthitta): With mercury soaring in the state, power consumption has tremendously increased and is expected to set new records this year. Despite the water levels in the reservoirs being higher compared to previous year, the domestic electricity generation has declined by 20-30 per cent.

Due to this, the electricity imported from outside the state has increased considerably. Estimate from previous years suggest that buying electricity from outside the state will only result in an additional financial burden. For the past few days, the daily power consumption has been above 74 million units. There also increases on a daily basis.

At the same time, the daily power generation in the state is between 15 and 19 million units. Electricity imports in the state have increased to 55-56 million units in the past few days. If domestic production does not increase in line with rising consumption, the state would have to rely on imports.

All the reservoirs in the state have 89 per cent of water. This is 7 percent more than the water level in the previous year. About 3691.662 million units of electricity can be generated using this water.
