One cop killed as police boat in hunt for Pothencode murder accused capsizes in lake


Thiruvananthapuram: A policeman was killed after a boat that went in search of an accused in the Pothencode Sudheesh murder case met with an accident in a lake at Anchuthengu here on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Balu(27), a policeman from SAP camp in Alappuzha.

The Varkala Circle Inspector Prashant and two others on board were rescued and brought ashore. It was the MNREGS workers in the banks of the lake who first reached the spot and initiated the rescue operation.

Though Balu was rescued from the waters and rushed to a hospital, he was declared dead.

The team of police including CI and policemen from various stations set off in the boat after receiving a tip-off on the hideout of Pothencode murder accused. As per the information, Rajesh, the second accused in the case was hiding on an island in the Anchuthengu area in Thiruvananthapuram.
But the boat in which the policemen were travelling capsized midway.

Earlier, the police have arrested 10 accused in the Pothencode murder case. Rajesh alias ‘Ottakam’ Rajesh who is named as the second accused in the case is absconding from the police.
