Malappuram: A 4-year-old boy, who fell into a pond in an abandoned quarry, and his 15-year-old cousin who tried to save him, drowned on Friday at Valluvambram in Malappuram. The deceased have been identified as Archana, daughter of Rajan and Adil Dev, son of Rajan's brother Vinod.

Adil Dev accidentally fell into a pond adjoining the quarry near his house on Friday morning. Archana, who was with Adil at the time, was drowned after she tried to save him by jumping into the pond.

At the time of the accident, no one else was present near the quarry. By the time the locals arrived, they were both dead. Later, the bodies of the children were shifted to Manjeri Medical College.

The locals had repeatedly demanded that the quarry be effectively dismantled. Following this, the district collector approved the demand. However, it was not fulfilled.
