Kochi: CPM and CPI leaders have criticised Governor Arif Mohammed Khan when the rift between him and the state government continues. The CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday said the governor's stance on the controversy regarding the appointment of the vice chancellor and subsequent decision to step down from his role as Chancellor were ‘mysterious’.
Meanwhile, CPI State Secretary Kanam Rajendran harshly criticized the actions of the governor and stated that the governor should not create a situation that would force the state to remove him from the position of Chancellor.
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told the media that a governor holds discretionary powers and does not have to make decisions based on external pressure. He added that decision to change his stance on the matter after approving the re-appointment of the vice-chancellor is mysterious.
“These are all issues that need to be discussed and resolved. The Governor is an important person holding a key constitutional position. He was also given the title of Chancellor and he is serving in that position too. The government has not taken any stand against it,” he said.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has already stated that no pressure had been exerted on the governor over the matter. The CM clarified that he has no plans to take over the post of Chancellor. The government wants the governor to continue in the post and he would be given all the power to act independently as chancellor, Kodiyeri added.
