Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday handed over the notice issued by a division bench of the Kerala High Court on the reappointment of vice-chancellor in the Kannur University to the state government. Addressing the media, he revealed that he directed officials in Raj Bhavan to forward the notice to the state government.
Earlier, the governor also directed his office to return the files related to the Kannur university to the government without making a decision.
“The court issued the notice to the chancellor of the university. I am not serving as the chancellor from December 8. I am not the person to take any responsibilities related to the University,” he said.
“The post of chancellor acts as per the rules and regulations. That is a responsibility enshrined in the constitution and was executed by the government through legislation. Therefore, the government should not interfere in matters. The government could take back the responsibilities given to a chancellor if it want to intervene. I am not intending any confrontation with the government,” he asserted.
Meantime, the court has also issued notices to the secretary of the higher education department of Kerala and Kannur University. The court will hear the case that questions the reappointment of Kannur University VC Dr Gopinath Raveedran on January 12. However, the Advocate General has said he will not appear in the case for the governor.
