Kozhikode: A massive fire broke out in a footwear godown at Meenchantha here on Tuesday. The fire was brought under control by seven fire force units. No fatalities are reported.
The fire broke out at Mark Footwear's warehouse at 2.30 am on Tuesday. The migrant workers, who were in the warehouse at the time of the accident, alerted the security personnel. The locals were the first to arrive at the scene.
Later, fire force units from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts arrived and tried to extinguish the fire. The raw materials and chemicals used for manufacturing footwear were highly inflammable and this made it difficult to contain the fire.
All the machineries used to make the footwear were destroyed. The building and its roof also suffered severe damages. Workers in the building have been evacuated to a safer location. According to the latest reports, thick smoke is seen rising from the building where the fire broke out.
The rescue operation was initially hampered as the fire force staff did not know which part of the 36-year-old building was on fire and where the chemicals were present. The fire brigade then entered the building after removing the walls of the building using a JCB.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to other buildings in the area.
