Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Thursday said that the state government should be willing to reduce the fuel tax.

“Although the Central Government has reduced the tax nominally, Kerala should be prepared to reduce the tax proportionately as other states have done. Kerala has earned an additional revenue of Rs 5,000 crore from fuel sales in five years. So, the government should help the people by reducing taxes,” Satheesan demanded.

The opposition leader also criticised that the state government and central government are making the life of people miserable by increasing the tax.

The Opposition leader was speaking on the sidelines of an emergency motion moved by K Babu MLA in the assembly.

“The Finance Minister is only trying to convince the people and his party members that there is a decrease in fuel price after the centre slashed the excise duty. We cannot be deceived on the matter,” Satheesan added.

Meantime, the opposition leader also pointed out that former Finance Minister Thomas Isaac was of the view that the tax must be reduced in the state if the central government reduce it as well.

On Thursday, the opposition called for a boycott of the assembly in protest of the government's unwillingness to reduce taxes. As a protest, the UDF MLAs used Bicycles as a mode of travel to the Assembly from MLA hostel premises demanding the state government to reduce the fuel tax.
