Kerala witnesses rising coconut prices; Rs 38 for a kilo
Coconut prices in the state are on an increasing spree after seeing a decline a few months back. A kilo of coconut in some retail markets are priced between Rs 34 and Rs 36. In some shops, coconuts are sold at Rs 38 and over Rs 40. During the last 3 months, coconut prices have seen a price increase of Rs 6 and more.
In June 2019, coconut prices dropped drastically and was at Rs 22 for a kilogram. The decrease in price was due to Kerafed stopping procurement of coconuts. As there was no procurement, the price started to dip in retail markets.
But during the Onam season, the demand for coconuts began to increase which witnessed a slight rise in prices. The festival seasons followed and the demand too increased. Last September, coconut price was Rs 28 for a kilo and by December it touched Rs 34. Coconut prices have seen an increase last January too and touched Rs 40.
Retailers said that there has been a shortage too in supply. Now 3 loads only reach the markets and when the demand is high, coconuts from neighbouring Tamil Nadu too reach the state markets.
Even smaller coconuts are having a price tag of Rs 20-Rs 22 in retail trading.
