Thiruvananthapuram: The vehicle registration website has been upgraded by facilitating the owner of a vehicle to nominate a person in its registration. It will enable the effortless transfer of ownership. The option of nomination has been made available to both new and already existing registrations.

Earlier, in case of death of the owner, the transfer of ownership to another person was a complicated process with a series of official procedures. The department had to hear the statements of all the heirs of the owner and can transfer the vehicle only if they reach a compromise. The heirs also had to appear and submit self-declaration in the office of the Motor Vehicle Department. Over 400 cases in connection with the vehicle inheritance exists in the vehicle department offices in the state.

Nominate yourself through mobile phones

Only owners who have their registered mobile numbers can nominate a person. The OTP will be sent to the registered number while the owner logs into the website vahan.parivahan.gov.in by entering the registration number of the vehicle. Along with the engine and chassis numbers, registration date and the registration validity have to be entered. Nominee’s name and the relationship with the owner shall be entered in the website to nominate a person for the vehicle. No fees shall ve levied to include the nominee.

If the owner dies, the nominee can submit an application to change the registration of the vehicle to his/her name. The death certificate of the owner, certificates that prove the relationship with the owner have to be provided.
