Kerala school students receive free handloom uniforms

Inaugural of free handloom uniform project

Kozhikode: The state-level inauguration of free handloom uniform project commenced at Nadakkavu GVHSS here on Friday. The initiative will provide free handloom uniforms to students from class 1 to 7 in government schools and from class 1 to 4 of government-aided schools. The move aims to give a push for the crisis-bound handloom sector.

Though the idea of distributing free handloom uniform to students has been going on since years, the project was proposed only in the Kerala Budget 2022. Finance Minister KN Balagopal had announced Rs 25 crore for the project

A total of 9,68,060 students from 7077 schools will get uniforms and benefit more than 6,000 workers involved in the sector. Meanwhile, the allocation is part of the Rs 120-crore worth project set aside for the year 2022-23.

The project has been executed by Directorate of Industries and Commerce and Directorate of Handloom and Textiles.

Education minister V Sivankutty said while inaugurating the project that the government finds both aided schools and government schools equally important for the state. He added that some officials show indifference to aided schools and the government has taken serious note of that.

Minister for Industries P Rajeeve had claimed that before the government launched the free handloom uniform scheme, the handloom employers worked for only a few days in a year and earned a daily wage of less than Rs 100. However, the workers are now ensured of more than 250 days of work per year with a daily allowance of over Rs 600.
